Coffee Table

This table was born out of an exploration of form. The coffee table itself is created from one four by eight sheet of three quarter inch plywood. To me, part of the beauty of this piece comes from the play on its original material form. The sculptural legs reveal each individual layer of the plywood, now in a new curved form - a reconstruction of their linear origin story. The result feels like a nod to a tree trunk, and a celebration of plywood, a genius material that finds strength in the layering process of much thinner pieces.

The form of the table was inspired by a sculptural piece I created. This piece was part of a series that explored the human body. Originally, my explorations began with 3D scans of friends. My first iterations consisted of pushing and pulling these scans, which I ultimately found counterintuitive to the celebration of the body. In the end I pivoted directions and created shapes inspired by, rather than reduced from, the human form.

The exploded axonometric shows the individual plywood cuts that were joined together to create the coffee table. Each piece was cut using the CNC router, glued together using wood glue, and sanded down by hand.
